A beautiful and inspiring story
Hi Keji! Wanna hear a success story?
Just got a PM role with a Digital Agency in London! Super-stoked!
Well, my success story is here!
I joined DBT in September 2017 with my husband, Edmonson. In the words of Princess Diana, “there were three people in our marriage” — Edmonson, DBT and I! Why do I say this? On Valentines Day, we were both in meetings, on our anniversary, he was presenting to the Senior BA’s and I was presenting to the PMO. Yep, we decided to bust our guts to make sure that we achieved what we set out to do.
I joined several projects including GDPR and the Raiders where I met some amazing people who taught me so much! I begged to get my hands dirty and as soon as an opening came, I jumped at the chance to become a project co-ordinator.
Admittedly, I had a background in Implementation, but i really wanted to gain a good understanding of “Digital Transformation”. So I began to study. I studied so much, to the extent that when I would post my automatic Check ins, people would ask me where I was getting my information from — lol!
Fast forward to April and I decided to take a leave of absence from my job to focus on job hunting. I watched the killer CV videos and updated my CV accordingly. I sent my CV to a few people who I respected on the platform for feedback. I tweaked it again and tested the market with my updated CV. The responses began to trickle in and where I fell short, I would go back and study and adjust my CV accordingly. On average I would apply to fifteen or twenty jobs a day!
By the end of April, I had numerous telephone interviews and two face to face interviews. One of them resulted in a job offer. I wanted a permanent role to start, but pushed the company for a higher than advertised salary and they agreed to my request. I’ll let you know who will be contacting you for a reference.
No (wo)man is an island and there are so many people who have helped me along my way. Oludare Olorunfemi- you have a heart of gold. Thank you for being so passionate about teaching other people. Grace Peters — thanks for being the first to assign me tasks. Helen Williams — thanks for being a sounding board. Samantha Danso — I learned SO much from you! Olayinka Cline-Thomas, thanks for hooking me up with Tosin Ogundere, who I have shadowed endlessly (you never saw me as a project co-ordinator, you expected so much more)! My Raiders family — Tosin, Samantha, Adekule, Funmi, Arinola, Angela, Tambi and the entire team. You guys are R-O-C-K-S-T-A-R-S!!!
Finally, I could not have achieved any of this without my amazing husband, Edmonson. You continue to rock my world, hun!
My advice to others, network, network, network! There are knowledgeable people on this platform. Tap into the ecosystem that is at your disposal.
(1) Don’t be afraid to ask people for help. There will always be someone who will say yes, even if others say no. (2) Study, study, study. I consumed information like it was going out of fashion. I stayed up late into the night and asked endless questions. (3) Volunteer for lead roles. There is nothing better than doing the job. Sitting in silence on a call teaches you NOTHING. Talk and let someone correct you, rather than be corrected at an interview.
